PROGRAM INFORMATION

The IES Foundation Year meets the requirements for Foundation Programs which have been registered on CRICOS for delivery in Australia to overseas students. It provides academic preparation for students seeking entry to first year undergraduate study.

Based on a student's academic background, English proficiency, desired undergraduate program and any additional needs, three programs within the IES Foundation Year are available.

Standard Program

(CRICOS Course Code 088290B)

The Standard program is recommended for students with good academic results and English language proficiency. It is the most popular of the three programs, with the majority of students choosing to study it. Students complete their studies in small class-sizes and have full access to student support services throughout the duration of their studies.

The program is 40 weeks in duration, with two weeks holidays, and is taught over two semesters in a face to face study format. The Standard program starts in February and August.

The Express program is designed for students who have stronger English language proficiency and are capable of handling a faster pace of tuition. It is also suitable for students who have completed a matriculation program in their own country but have not quite met the entry levels for undergraduate study or who need to gain assumed knowledge in certain subjects.
The program is 27 weeks in duration, with two weeks holidays, and is taught over three trimesters in a face to face study format. Students study both AE and Mathematics throughout the duration of their program and can choose three electives. The Express program starts in May and October.

The Extended program offers additional support and services to help students maximise their success at foundation and university. The extended feature of this program consists of Mathematics and intensive English. On top of the Student Services available to them as part of the Standard and Express programs, Extended students have regular meetings with the program coordinator to ensure they are meeting the challenges of their studies. The program is especially beneficial for younger students who need to increase their English language competency.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Students study five subjects over the duration of their foundation studies. Academic English for University Studies and Mathematics are compulsory subjects for all students. Students also study three elective subjects across a range of disciplines. Subject selection is based on the student's interests as well as entry requirements for their undergraduate preference.

Students may change undergraduate preference at any time during their foundation studies providing they have selected relevant elective subjects.

Due to undergraduate requirements and potential scheduling conflicts, not all subject combinations may be available.

Compulsory Subjects

Elective Subjects (Choice of 3)

*Some subject combinations unavailable. Example: Accounting/Biology and Physics/Economics combinations are unavailable.

Assessment

Throughout the program, academic achievement is carefully monitored and students are given regular feedback on their progress. Students study 20-25 contact hours per week. In addition to formal class time, students are expected to study for at least 20 hours per week in their own time.

Assessment depends on the subject, but normally comprises two examination papers, one or two assignments to be completed by a specified date during the course, laboratory practical work (if relevant) and seminar participation evaluation. Final assessment will take into account all of the above.

All subjects are graded on a 7-point scale:

5 Credit 65-74%
4 Pass/Competent 50-64%
